University technology holding companies, with Seoul National University Technology Holdings as the worked case
대학 기술지주회사와 서울대학교기술지주
A technology holding company is a legally defined structure: a company controlled by a university industry-academic cooperation unit or research institute, formed to commercialise the university's technology through equity stakes in subsidiary spinoffs. Seoul National University Technology Holdings, founded in 2008, is the worked example, using its own published programme list.

Korea's university technology holding companies are not marketing labels. Statute defines the structure. A founder dealing with one should know what the law actually requires of it.
The legal definition: control through equity, not just support
A statute, the Act on Promotion of Industrial Education and Industry-Academic-Research Cooperation, defines "산학연협력기술지주회사." It is a company that controls another company through stock ownership. Its purpose must be commercialising technology held by a university unit or a research institute.
A statutory database quoting the act's Article 2 sets the matching rule for a "자회사" (subsidiary). The subsidiary's technology must originate at a university or research institute. The holding company must control its operations.
| Technology holding company | General startup office | |
|---|---|---|
| Takes equity in the company | Yes, by statutory definition | Not necessarily |
| Technology origin required | University or research institute | No requirement stated |
| Legal basis | Named in the industry-academic cooperation act | Not a defined legal category |
Premise check: POSTECH Holdings' own domain no longer serves the company
This post first checked postechholdings.com, POSTECH Holdings' known domain. A POSTECH recruitment notice confirms that domain: it lists a staff email address there. As of research, the domain no longer serves the company.
It now redirects to an unrelated organisation's homepage. This research could not reach the entity under its own name. This post swaps in a different, reachable technology holding company as the worked case instead.
The worked case: Seoul National University Technology Holdings
SNU Technology Holdings' site calls itself "서울대학교의 유일한 투자기관," the university's sole investment institution. It began operating in 2008. Its stated approach: discover, invest in and grow startups, using a trusted brand and follow-up investment capacity.
The site lists four programmes: TIPS, ScaleUp TIPS, an Accelerating Program and a Business Incubator. Its investment cycle runs in four stages: discovery, an initial investment, scale-up consulting with follow-on funding, and recovery for reinvestment.
What the site shows, and what it does not state
SNU Technology Holdings names three portfolio companies. Rebellions is Korea's first AI semiconductor unicorn, per the site. Travel Wallet is the country's first zero-fee international remittance fintech.
Brightonix Imaging works in AI-integrated medical imaging.
The site showed no readable figures for total assets, fund count or full portfolio size at research time. This post omits those numbers rather than estimating them.
The right question when you meet a university programme calling itself a technology holding company is not "does it support startups?" It is "does it take equity, and is the technology behind the company actually the university's own?"
