COMEUP 2026 lands at COEX on 9 December — and the K-Startup Grand Challenge window is still unannounced

Two things are left on a foreign founder's Korean calendar this year. One has a confirmed date and a venue. The other has a programme, a budget and no announced window, which is a more awkward thing to plan around.

Here is what each actually says about itself, and where the internet is confidently telling you something its own organiser is not.

COMEUP 2026 is a ministry event with a fixed date

COMEUP is Korea's flagship national startup festival. The dates are settled: 9 December (Wednesday) to 11 December (Friday) 2026, at COEX 3F C Hall in Gangnam, with a YouTube stream alongside the floor.

The organiser line matters more than it looks. COMEUP is run by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups together with KISED.

That makes it a different kind of room from a privately run conference. The agency that writes the 모집공고 for most of the programmes in our programme catalogue is the same agency standing in this hall.

Most of the programme is genuinely not published yet

This is the part worth setting expectations on. As of early September, COMEUP's own site marks nearly every section — the schedule, business matching, the exhibition, Future Talk, OI Ground — as 추후 공개됩니다, "to be announced later".

So there is a date and a venue and very little else. That is normal for a December event in September, and it is also why any article giving you a detailed COMEUP 2026 agenda today is telling you something the organiser has not said.

Check back in October. The schedule is the section to watch.

What the site does name is the shape: Future Talk, Business Matching, OI Ground, Future Founder, and an Exhibition, alongside published line-ups for speakers, investors, an advisory committee and a global community track.

Two of those are worth circling now. Business Matching and OI Ground are the open-innovation strands, which is where the corporates come to meet startups rather than to be talked at.

If your reason for attending is a corporate partnership rather than an investor, those two sections are the event, and everything else is context. Watch for their application mechanics specifically — open-innovation tracks usually gate on a form, not a badge.

The festival's own framing for 2026 is "The Unseen becomes Unstoppable", with global scale-up, investment, open innovation and cross-border collaboration as the stated themes.

The K-Startup Grand Challenge is the foreigner-shaped one

COMEUP is a festival. KSGC is a programme, and it is the only national one designed around foreign founders rather than merely open to them.

KISED's own page sets the eligibility plainly: foreign nationals with a startup, or a prospective startup, established within seven years.

What it carries is unusually complete for a Korean programme:

Roughly 40 companies take part each year.

Read that visa line carefully, because it is the rare programme where the paperwork is part of the offer rather than your problem. Most of the catalogue assumes you have already solved status. This one does not.

The five phases, which tell you where the work is

KISED publishes the shape of the process: announcement, application, evaluation and selection, entry support, then the programme itself.

Two of those five happen before you are chosen, and one of them — entry support — happens after selection but before the incubation starts. That middle step is the visa and arrival machinery.

Read the sequence as a warning about lead time. A programme with an entry-support phase is a programme that expects you to be outside Korea, and moving countries on a government timetable is not a two-week exercise.

Applications go in online through the K-Startup portal, in English, with a business plan.

The dates problem, stated plainly

Here is where this post refuses to be helpful in the way you might want.

KISED has not published a 2026 KSGC application window. Its programme page still shows an April-May 2025 window and makes no reference to 2026 at all.

Meanwhile a July-2026-to-April-2027 timeline circulates widely, along with a headline funding figure, phase breakdowns and a COMEUP demo-day slot. None of it resolves back to KISED or the Ministry.

It may well be accurate. Someone may be reading a press release we have not found. But an application deadline is exactly the kind of fact that should never reach you second-hand.

And do not click the old domain

One concrete hazard. k-startupgc.org, the address carried in older KSGC materials and still cited in plenty of write-ups, has lapsed and now serves a German online-casino affiliate site.

It is not a redirect and not a hack. Someone re-registered an expired government-adjacent domain, which is a common and profitable thing to do.

Use kised.or.kr and k-startup.go.kr. Nothing else.

What to do between now and December

Neither of these rewards a founder who shows up cold. Both reward one who prepared in September.

For COMEUP, decide what you are hunting

A festival badge buys you two days and roughly forty useful seconds per stranger. Spend September deciding which stranger.

Pick one of three: an investor, a corporate partner, or a government desk. They are different rooms and different pitches.

If it is a corporate partner, watch Business Matching and OI Ground. Those strands usually open a form weeks before the doors, and the form is the actual entry point.

If it is a government desk, the advantage is simply that they are all in one building. Chasing the same people across six agency websites takes months.

Bring something that survives a noisy hall. A demo on a phone works. A deck does not.

For KSGC, build the application now

The window is unannounced, which is an argument for preparing early rather than late. When it opens it will not stay open long.

Two documents do the work: an English application form and a business plan. Neither is quick if you have not written one before.

The plan is the harder half. Korean programmes expect a specific structure, and a plan written for a Western seed round reads wrong here.

Start from the PSST format the government uses. Problem, Solution, Scale-up, Team. It is the shape the evaluators are trained to score.

Then check your own eligibility honestly against the seven-year rule. A company incorporated in 2018 is outside it, and no amount of plan quality changes that.

A note on the December date itself

Three days at COEX in December is not a small ask. Plan the travel early if you are outside Seoul.

The YouTube stream changes the calculation for anyone abroad. Keynotes will be watchable remotely.

The floor will not be. Business matching, the exhibition and every corridor conversation need a body in the room.

So treat the stream as a preview, not a substitute. If the reason to attend is a partnership, attending remotely is the same as not attending.

Set one reminder, not a subscription

You do not need to watch this weekly. KISED announces once, and the K-Startup portal carries it.

A monthly check of both is enough. Put it in the calendar for the first of each month and stop thinking about it.

That is the whole discipline. Two events, two documents, one recurring reminder.

How the two fit together

They are not alternatives, and they are not the same kind of commitment.

COMEUP costs you three days in December and gives you a ministry-run room. KSGC costs you an application and, if selected, three and a half months, and gives you money, space and visa help.

A founder already in Korea should treat COMEUP as reconnaissance and KSGC as the actual instrument. The festival tells you who is buying; the programme is the thing that pays.

And both sit above the ordinary announcement calendar rather than replacing it. The 모집공고 deadlines in the programme catalogue are still where most of the money in this system is handed out, quietly, in Korean, on a schedule nobody publicises in English.
